(Originally aired on Pirate Cat Radio, 87.9FM, San Francisco)
Irvine Welsh has been another one of those authors I’ve been trying to track down for years….stalking him, just missing him from Scottish pubs…..all of my field recording gear strapped to my waist and a large shotgun microphone in a case that bartenders always ask to see….fearing it’s a gun case or something….their bodies physically relax and they sometimes offer me a free drink when they find out it’s a microphone.
But seriously, five years ago I had an interview set up with Irvine Welsh that I had to cancel because I suffer from agoraphobia and I was really having a bad time mentally, so I couldn’t leave our East Bay apartment to get to San Francisco for our meeting. I’m a lot better now…but enough about me.
Irvine’s latest book is “The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs” published by W.W. Norton. He is also the author of “Trainspotting” and “The Acid House.”
We met at a bar in the Upper Haight across the street from Booksmith where he was scheduled to do a book signing.
